this is how my laptop desktop looks with Ubuntu 11.10 OS.
what made it look like above:
install compiz
install cairo dock
select mac theme for cairo dock
select cube with 4 workspace on compiz as desktop
i have chosen transparent cube.
choose whichever image(see sky in the background) you want as skydrome under cube option in compiz
